What it does

RC-20 Retro Color is XLN Audio's creative multi-effect for adding character and analog warmth, recreating the feel of vintage recording gear. It has six modules, each with its own controls:

Noise: looped noise from vinyl crackle and tape hiss to studio ambience, circuit hum and stompbox static.
Wobble: the wow and flutter of unstable vinyl players and tape machines.
Distort: several distortion types, from mild saturation to raging fuzz.
Digital: sample-rate and bit-depth reduction, for the sound of old samplers and digital gear.
Space: a reverb tailored for depth and width.
Magnetic: tape wear, flutter and volume dropouts.

A Magnitude slider scales every module at once, useful for transitions and drops, and Flux controls add random movement to key settings. There are also master tone, width and filter controls, and presets for drums, keys, guitars, bass, full mixes and post-production.

RC-20 isn't a single-stage saturator. It's an all-in-one retro rack that combines noise, wow and flutter, distortion, bit crushing, reverb and tape dropouts, so it's the quickest way to make something sound old.

Best for: loops, keys, guitars, drums and melodic parts. Used lightly, it also adds glue and vibe on a bus or full mix.
Genres: strongly tied to lo-fi and beat-making. Tutorials call it the ultimate lo-fi plugin, and hip-hop producers use it for cassette, VHS and vinyl textures.
Also: a sound-design tool for glitchy effects and for refreshing stale loops.
