Keywords: drum machine, experimental, randomize, sidechain input, sound design.
What it does
Life is XLN Audio's audio-to-groove instrument. It analyses recorded audio, slices it into sounds and recombines them into new rhythmic patterns.
- Beat generation: automatic conversion of audio into beat slices, with a Randomize function for endless variations.
- Recording: a 30-second buffer for capturing audio from the DAW, plus a mobile Field Recorder app with cloud sync.
- Sidechain duck: added in version 1.2.

When to use it
Life is for making beats out of found or recorded sound rather than a drum-sample library. It sits between a sampler and a groove generator, unlike XLN's XO, which is the sample-library counterpart.
- Best for: sampling everyday sounds into grooves, experimental and electronic beat-making, and idea generation.
- Look elsewhere if: you want conventional drum kits played from MIDI.
