XILS 5000 is an emulation of the 1976 EMS 5000 vocoder, with 22 or 20 bands and a matrix patch area for routing bands.
Two VCS3-style synth cores serve as carriers, with a voice/unvoice detector and frequency shifter, for €49 on sale (about $55.64).
Best for: Vocals, Keys & Synths, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Ambient & Cinematic, Pop.
Keywords: hardware emulation, synths, 70s, classic, keys, metering, sidechain input, sound design, vocals, creative, enhancement, inspired by, mixing, modern, organic, PWM, smooth, steep learning curve, vintage, wide.
What it does
XILS 5000 models the EMS Vocoder 5000 of 1976, adding modern routing and analysis tools the hardware lacked. The developer calls it "The Organic Vocoder" and aims for organic sound with precision and clarity.
- Filter banks: 22-band or 20-band banks that split modulator and carrier into bands of equal width, with 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct slopes and per-band emphasis curves.
- Patch matrix: a 22×22 or 20×20 pin matrix that connects any analysis band to any synthesis band, with its own preset manager for formant layouts.
- Synth cores: two built-in cores inspired by the EMS VCS3, each with two oscillators (saw, pulse, triangle, sine, with FM and PWM), noise, two LFOs and an ADSR; oscillators can be fixed, follow the keyboard or follow the pitch tracker.
- Analysis: a voice/unvoice detector with threshold, frequency and smoothness, a sibilant detector based on the developer's DeeS de-esser, an analog-style pitch tracker and an input gate.
- Processing: slew rate control, a freeze for spectrum hold or resonator effects, and a frequency shifter with level and pan per component.
- Routing and metering: stereo analysis and synthesis, sidechain input for an external carrier, a full output mixer, per-band LED meters and needle VU meters.
The current version is 1.1.3. A demo can be downloaded and a 15-day full demo licence is available.
When to use it
XILS 5000 is the pick for deep vocoder sound design, where re-routing bands and shaping the carrier matter as much as getting robot vocals. Unlike the rated vocal tools such as Nectar 4 or Pro-DS, it is a creative effect, not a mixing processor. Compared with XILS V+, its vocoder has twice as many bands, a full patch matrix and two built-in synth cores, while V+ is the simpler choice for classic VP-330 choir and string sounds. It is also more complex than XILS 201 and takes more time to learn.
- Best for: detailed vocoder textures, band re-routing, frozen spectra and resonator effects, and classic EMS vocoder tones.
- Genres: electronic, ambient, experimental, film and pop.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a quick, simple vocoder (XILS 201) or vintage string and choir pads with a vocoder (XILS V+).
- Tip: run the demo on your own system first, since reviewers found it very heavy on CPU.
What producers say
Reviewers rate its sound among the best of any software vocoder, with CPU load and a steep learning curve as the trade-offs.
- Computer Music (MusicRadar, 2015) called it "the best software vocoder we've ever heard", praising the flexible band routing, sidechain carrier input and the built-in synth.
- Tape Op (issue 106, 2015) found it the more captivating of the two XILS vocoders it tested, praising the 22×22 matrix and the "huge range of control" over vocoding.
- Criticisms: Computer Music found CPU use extremely high even on powerful systems, the manual unclear, and the interface unintuitive, with advanced controls hidden away.
