XILS 3 LE is a lower-priced version of XILS-lab's emulation of the EMS VCS3 (Synthi) modular synth and its 256 analog sequencer.

Matrix connection amounts are fixed rather than adjustable, and it costs €29 on sale (about $32.93).

What it does

XILS 3 LE is XILS-lab's lower-priced version of its EMS VCS3 (Synthi) emulation, paired with a recreation of the EMS 256 analog sequencer. The developer says "the analog spirit has been preserved" while gaining digital stability for live use. The main limit next to the full XILS 3 and XILS 4: the amount of each matrix connection is fixed and can't be tweaked.

Oscillators: six oscillators in three pairs with wave-shaping on sine, saw, triangle and square, plus a noise oscillator with colour control.
Filter: one non-linear, zero-delay analog-style low-pass filter with 12, 18 and 24 dB slopes, and two independent stereo outputs, each with its own LP/HP filter.
Envelope and modules: a trapezoid envelope that loops or switches to ADSR, a polyphonic ring modulator, pitch tracker, envelope follower, transient, gate and sample & hold.
Pin matrices: five matrices (256 plus 110 points) for audio, trigger, and sequencer modulation and trigger connections, plus a programmable joystick vector controller.
Sequencer: three independent lines with three recording modes and slew controls, also usable as a modulation source.
Effects: analog-style chorus with three modes, analog delay and vintage spring reverb.
Play modes: six modes including 2/4/6-voice unison, poly and mono portamento, glissando and legato, with polyphonic aftertouch, two keyboard scaling options and MIDI CC on any parameter. It can also process external audio as an effect.

The current version is 2.6.3. It comes with 140 presets and a tagging preset browser. The page lists no demo for it.

When to use it

XILS 3 LE is a cheap way into the EMS VCS3's pin-matrix patching and its odd, unstable textures. Compared with Phase Plant, it gives you a fixed, period-correct signal path instead of an open modular canvas, and it is far less flexible for modern sound design. Next to Diva it covers different ground: Diva models classic subtractive poly synths with high accuracy, while XILS 3 LE aims at the Synthi's ring-mod, noise and sequencer weirdness. Against the full XILS 3 and XILS 4 it loses adjustable matrix amounts and some customisation, but keeps the core sound, the sequencer and the effects at a fraction of the price.

Best for: experimental textures, drones, sound effects and classic Synthi sounds, and running other audio through the EMS filter.
Genres: electronic, ambient, experimental and film music.
Look elsewhere if: you want tweakable matrix amounts or more customisation (the full XILS 4 goes further), or a modern open modular synth (Phase Plant).
Tip: Tape Op's reviewer routed vocals through the EMS filter and automated the cutoff for a distinctive effect.

What producers say

The one detailed review found is enthusiastic, though it dates from an earlier version.

Tape Op (John Baccigaluppi) said it sounds "maybe even better than I remember the Synthi sounding" and praised its polyphony, which the original lacks, and its efficiency with several instances.
Also noted by Tape Op: it works as an audio processor as well as a synth, and the review raised no real criticisms.
