What it does

XILS 201 is a filter-bank vocoder modelled on the Sennheiser VSM 201, a rare 1970s unit known for very clear speech. The developer bills it as a vocoder and "vintage MultiEffect", and adds many parameters the original never had.

The current version is 1.1.3. A demo can be downloaded, and a 15-day time-limited full licence is available on request.

When to use it

XILS 201 is the pick when you want a classic, intelligible vintage vocoder with its own carrier synth, so no separate instrument is needed. It does a different job from the rated vocal tools: Nectar 4 polishes and processes a vocal, while XILS 201 turns it into a talking synth or robot voice. Compared with XILS-lab's own XILS 5000, it is the simpler, cheaper vocoder, with fixed 20-band filter banks instead of the EMS-style matrix approach. Its weak spot is the interface: unlabelled band frequencies and drag-only switches make it slower to set up than a plain modern vocoder.

What producers say

Reviewers praise the authentic VSM 201 sound but find the interface fiddly.
