Poly M by XILS-lab

Poly M emulates the Polymoog, with top-octave-divider oscillators, nine acoustic preset filters, a 24 dB ladder filter and a resonator bank.

It adds four vintage effects, an arpeggiator and over 440 presets, for €49 on sale (about $55.64).

Best for: Keys & Synths, Bass, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Pop, R&B & Soul, Ambient & Cinematic.

Keywords: hardware emulation, vintage, strings, organ, arpeggiator, basses, fat, monophonic, preset-driven, warm, modulation matrix, pads, brass, cinematic, harp, sound design, tempo-synced.

What it does

Poly M is XILS-lab's emulation of the Polymoog, built on its top-octave-divider oscillators. The developer spent more than two years analysing the original and says it "excels in warm, wide modulated sounds and fat basses", while opening up parameters the hardware did not expose.

This is version 1.5.4, with NKS support. A 15-day time-limited demo licence is available.

When to use it

Poly M is the pick for the specific late-1970s Polymoog sound: divide-down strings, organ, Vox Humana-style choirs and wide, modulated pads. Compared with Diva, it covers one unusual architecture rather than several voice-per-note polysynths, and its fixed acoustic filters give it a sound closer to a string machine than a typical analog polysynth. It is far narrower than Vital or Pigments 7, which cover modern wavetable and hybrid synthesis, and its monophonic envelope and LFOs make it less suited to complex per-voice movement. It is also one of the cheaper XILS-lab synths at its current sale price.
