What it does

XMTubePre is a free one-knob tube preamp from Xilentch's XM series, inspired by the 12AX7 valve found in classic studio gear. The developer says it was "designed to be transparent, just like the other XM plugins", while still giving the feel of expensive hardware.

One-knob control: a single amount control sets how much tube character is added.
Tube harmonics and tone: adds harmonic saturation and some tone shaping in the style of a 12AX7 preamp stage.
Subtle to obvious: below 50% the effect stays subtle; above 50% it becomes much more pronounced.
Mixing and mastering: clean enough to use on buses and the master, and suited to tracking and mixing as well.
Creative drive: pushed hard, it works as a more aggressive colour effect.
Input-sensitive: the drive depends strongly on the level going in, so gain staging before the plugin matters.

When to use it

XMTubePre is the pick when you want quick, free tube warmth without learning any controls. Compared with Black Box Analog Design HG-2, it has far fewer tone and drive controls, but it costs nothing and takes seconds to set. It is closer in spirit to Klanghelm's IVGI as a light colour tool, though IVGI gives you more than one control. Against Decapitator or Softube's Saturation Knob, it offers one tube flavour rather than several saturation styles. Its main catch, at least at launch, was the lack of input and output trims, so the drive depends on the level you feed it.

Best for: a touch of tube warmth on buses, masters, vocals and keys.
Genres: any.
Look elsewhere if: you want several saturation types and tone controls; Decapitator or HG-2 offer more.
Tip: keep the input to around -18 dBFS at most, then set the knob below 50% for subtle colour or above it for a stronger effect.

What producers say

Early coverage liked the sound once the sweet spot is found, but warned that it reacts strongly to input level.

Bedroom Producers Blog said it can "sound very good when you find the sweet spot" and that the developer is "on a good path" with the XM series.
Criticisms: BPB found it "extremely sensitive to input gain" and missed dedicated input and output controls, which the developer promised to add.
