Geminate by Witch Pig

Geminate is a free doubler from Witch Pig that makes single-tracked parts sound double-tracked.

It randomises loudness and timing and adds micro-pitch detuning for bigger, wider sounds.

Best for: Guitars, Vocals, Keys & Synths, Acoustic Instruments. Genres: Rock & Indie, Metal, Pop.

Keywords: free, thick, enhancement, subtle, tracking, electric guitar, keys, vocals, loose, minimal controls, piano, simple, clean, extreme, gentle, mixing, randomize, tight.

What it does

Geminate is a free doubler from Witch Pig that "makes single tracked instruments sound as if they were double tracked". Instead of widening the existing signal, it alters one channel with small random changes so the two sides sound like separate takes.

Version 1.0 is free. It is downloaded from Witch Pig's site via Gumroad.

When to use it

Geminate is the better pick when a part was recorded once and you want it to sound like it was played twice. Unlike Ozone Imager or S1 Stereo Imager, which widen the stereo content already in the track, it creates a second, slightly different performance from random timing, level and pitch changes, so it also works on mono sources. Compared with Wider, it gives a looser, more human spread rather than a mono-safe phase effect, but it has no width meter or correlation display. It is also far simpler than those tools: three knobs and a channel switch, and it costs nothing.

What producers say

Early coverage is positive, with the best results reported from gentle settings.
