What it does

Alien Step Mutha is a free multi-FX step sequencer from Witch Pig, built around a cartoon interface: the developer calls it "an out of this world multi-FX step sequencer". Instead of a grid of steps, you drag above or below a row of baby aliens to set each step, and the large mother alien opens the global controls.

Version 1.0 is free. It is downloaded from Witch Pig or KVR.

When to use it

Alien Step Mutha is a free, playful way to get sequenced effects, and it is better suited to happy accidents than to precise programming. Compared with Effectrix2, it has far fewer effects and no per-step pattern editing, but it costs nothing and is quick to get chaotic results from. Next to ShaperBox 3 it offers no drawn curves or per-band control; its sequencing is coarse and hands-on. It is also much narrower than Infiltrator 2, which chains many effects with its own sequencers. Choose it when you want instant glitchy movement for free and enjoy the novelty interface.

What producers say

Press coverage was short but positive, focused on the interface and the wild sound; no user reviews were listed on KVR.
