A model of the LA-2A electro-optical leveler. Two main controls, Peak Reduction and Gain, and a program-dependent release that flatters almost any voice or bass line.

Paired after the CLA-76, it forms the classic two-stage vocal chain: the FET catches peaks and the opto smooths the rest. Presets come from Chris Lord-Alge.

What it does

CLA-2A models the Teletronix LA-2A electro-optical tube compressor, with presets from Chris Lord-Alge. Like the original, it's deliberately simple:

Peak Reduction: sets how much it compresses.
Gain: sets the output level.
Compress/Limit switch: changes how firmly it holds the signal.
Frequency response control: shifts the compression from flat toward reducing more treble.

Waves emphasises the optical cell's behaviour: a fixed, non-linear attack that lets some punch through, and a two-stage release that slows as it recovers. The result is smooth, natural, frequency-dependent leveling, with more tube colour as you push the gain.

When to use it

Choose CLA-2A when you want smooth, musical leveling without thinking about attack, release or ratio. It's a quick way to make a vocal warmer and fuller while still letting consonants through.

Best for: sources without sharp transients: vocals above all, plus bass and acoustic guitar.
Genres: a common choice in pop, R&B, hip-hop and rock vocal chains.
Look elsewhere for: drums or transparent, surgical work. For a faster, punchier response, Waves points to its CLA-3A.
