Tube Saturator Vintage by Wave Arts

Tube Saturator Vintage is a free reissue of Wave Arts' original Tube Saturator, simulating a preamp with two 12AX7 triode stages and a Baxandall 3-band EQ.

Drive, a FAT mode for extra punch and an EQ bypass keep it simple, with no latency.

Best for: Guitars, Bass, Drums, Vocals, Keys & Synths. Genres: all genres.

Keywords: tube, CPU-heavy, fat, circuit-modelled, drums, free, hardware emulation, low latency, punchy, vocals, bus processing, metering, vintage, bass, component-modelled, mix bus, mixing, musical, room mics, simple, single-band, warm, zero-latency.

What it does

Tube Saturator Vintage is the original Wave Arts Tube Saturator, now given away free. It uses 64-bit circuit simulation of a basic circuit: a Baxandall-type 3-band EQ feeding two 12AX7 triode preamp stages. Wave Arts notes it was CPU-hungry, which led to the more efficient Tube Saturator 2.

When to use it

Tube Saturator Vintage is the pick when you want a realistic tube preamp that reacts to level and frequency content, and you don't mind paying for it in CPU. Compared with Softube's Saturation Knob, it is slower to dial in but behaves more like a real circuit, and it adds a 3-band EQ ahead of the tubes. Unlike Decapitator, which offers several fixed characters and a mix control, it has one tube sound with a FAT switch and no wet/dry blend. It is free, where Decapitator and most of the rated saturators are paid. Its own successor, Tube Saturator 2, adds the 12AU7 tube, 2x oversampling and a wet/dry mix while using much less CPU.

What producers say

Users like its realistic, musical saturation, with CPU use as the main drawback.
