Studio Special Brass by Vienna Symphonic Library

A library of 17 less common brass instruments and groups, including muted trumpets and trombones, fanfare trumpets, piccolo and bass trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn, eight epic horns, Wagner tuba and cimbasso.

It is recorded dry on VSL's Silent Stage with optional Vienna MIR Pro 3D reverb, for €699 (about $794).

What it does

Studio Special Brass is VSL's add-on of rarer, muted and large-ensemble brass, recorded dry on the Silent Stage at Synchron Stage Vienna. VSL pitches it as "Muted & Mighty", from intimate jazz to battle scenes.

In all it has 17 instruments and ensembles and 142,018 samples. It succeeds instruments from VSL's discontinued VI Series, with upgrade paths for owners. It runs in the Vienna Synchron Player.

When to use it

Studio Special Brass is an expansion for a template that already has standard brass. Compared with BBC Symphony Orchestra Core and Hollywood Orchestra Opus Edition, which cover the core brass sections in a hall, it adds the instruments those usually leave out, such as cimbasso, Wagner tuba, contrabass trombone, bass trumpet and a range of mutes. Because it is dry, it blends into other libraries more easily than a hall recording, but you will need to add space yourself or use the mixer presets. It is also pricey for an add-on, so it makes most sense if you write for these specific colours often.
