What it does

This Vienna Symphonic Library piano samples a Bösendorfer Grand Upright 130 on Stage B of the Synchron Stage in Vienna. VSL's aim is an upright with a "rich tone with a powerful bass" and a wide dynamic range, flexible enough to sound dry and close or big and reverberant.

It plays in VSL's Synchron Player.

When to use it

Studio Bösendorfer Upright is the pick when you want an upright that is clean and full enough to pass for a small grand, with real control over mic perspective. Compared with Originals Felt Piano, it is brighter and more conventional, with far more mic options but none of the soft felt character. Compared with Keyscape or Addictive Keys, it is a single, deeply sampled piano rather than a collection, and its eight-mic Full edition gives more room for mixing a piano on its own. Unlike Pianoteq 9, it is sampled rather than modelled, so it offers less tweaking of the instrument itself.

What producers say

Users who bought it at launch were impressed by how much it sounds like a small grand.
