BBO Woodwinds by Vienna Symphonic Library

A Big Bang Orchestra 2.0 pack with a 13-player woodwind ensemble, from piccolo to contrabassoon, recorded on Stage A of the Synchron Stage Vienna.

It includes tutti woodwind and FX woodwind patches with several mic positions, for €99 (about $112).

Best for: Acoustic Instruments. Genres: Ambient & Cinematic.

Keywords: woodwinds, ensemble, sample-based, simple, cinematic, beginner-friendly, brass, choir, film & game audio, strings, thick.

What it does

BBO Woodwinds is the woodwind pack of Big Bang Orchestra 2.0: a full woodwind section playing together in unison and octaves, which VSL pitches as "the breath of the orchestra". It is built for big blended colours rather than solo lines.

Ensemble: 13 players from piccolo to contrabassoon, including flutes, oboes, English horn, clarinets, bass clarinet, bassoons and contrabassoon.
Tutti Woodwinds: the whole section blended in one patch.
FX Woodwinds: effects played by high and low woodwind ensembles.
Mic positions: Decca tree (stereo and centre), main surround, high stereo, high surround and mid mics, plus close mics for flutes, oboes, clarinets and bassoons.
Presets: Room Mix, Stereo Decca Tree, Surround to Stereo, Surround and Processed presets.
Recording: Stage A of the Synchron Stage Vienna, the same room as the rest of BBO, so it matches the other packs.

The pack holds 55,326 samples. BBO 2.0 regrouped the original Big Bang Orchestra libraries into seven packs by instrument family (Tutti, Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Riffs and Choirs), also sold together as the Big Bang Orchestra Bundle; owners of the older BBO packs get upgrade pricing. It runs in the Vienna Synchron Player (with VSL's Flow View). It has a 30-day free trial.

When to use it

BBO Woodwinds is the quick way to add a full, blended woodwind colour to a big cue. Compared with BBC Symphony Orchestra Core and Hollywood Orchestra Opus Edition, it has no individual woodwind instruments or solo players, just the whole 13-player section and its effects, so it is faster to use but much narrower. It is also cheaper than a full orchestra if you only need woodwind weight and colour. Within VSL's range, the Synchron woodwind libraries are the better choice for exposed, detailed parts.

Best for: woodwind doublings, swells and effects that thicken large orchestral cues.
Genres: cinematic, trailer music and game scores.
Look elsewhere if: you need solo woodwind lines or separate instruments; a full orchestra such as BBC Symphony Orchestra Core or a Synchron woodwind library suits that.

What producers say

There are no reviews focused on BBO Woodwinds yet; reviewers of the BBO 2.0 bundle as a whole were positive.

Sound On Sound (Dave Stewart, July 2026) gave BBO 2.0 five stars, crediting the regrouping into seven family-based packs, access to all mic positions and the simpler Flow interface.
Sample Library Review (November 2025) called the bundle "Instantly Epic!" and praised its "high-octane, easy to use and flexible scoring", but gave no pack-by-pack detail.
