Keywords: ensemble, brass, simple, strings, tempo-synced, woodwinds, cinematic, beginner-friendly, choir, film & game audio, tight.

What it does

BBO Riffs is the pattern pack of Big Bang Orchestra 2.0: ready-made, 4-bar orchestral and percussion phrases that VSL describes as "hundreds of combinable 4-bar themes". You build tension and chase cues by stacking and switching patterns instead of writing every note.

Tutti Symphonic Riffs: patterns played by the full orchestra together with the percussion ensemble.
Symphonic Riffs: section patterns for strings, woodwinds, horns, trumpets and low brass, with Clusters and Expansion sets for more variations.
Percussion Ensemble Riffs: Main, Low and High percussion patterns that can run under the orchestral riffs.
Tempo sync: real-time time-stretching that follows the host tempo.
Flow View: VSL's simplified interface for quick playback and combining patterns.
Mic positions: Decca tree (stereo and centre), main surround, high stereo and surround, plus close mics for high strings, low strings, woodwinds, horns, trumpets and low brass.

It is a big pack of 50,016 samples. BBO 2.0 regrouped the original Big Bang Orchestra libraries into seven packs by instrument family (Tutti, Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Riffs and Choirs), also sold together as the Big Bang Orchestra Bundle; owners of the older BBO packs get upgrade pricing. It runs in the Vienna Synchron Player (with VSL's Flow View). It has a 30-day free trial.

When to use it

BBO Riffs is for composers who want working orchestral motion in seconds. Unlike BBC Symphony Orchestra Core or Hollywood Orchestra Opus Edition, which give you instruments and articulations to play yourself, it gives you finished, tempo-synced phrases from a whole orchestra and percussion ensemble. That makes it much faster for tension and chase beds, but far less flexible: you choose and combine patterns rather than shape every line. It works best alongside a playable orchestra, filling the rhythmic layer while you write the themes on top.

Best for: chase, action and tension cues built quickly from layered patterns, and fast mock-ups under tight deadlines.
Genres: cinematic, trailer music and game scores.
Look elsewhere if: you want to write every note yourself; a playable orchestra such as BBC Symphony Orchestra Core or BBO Tutti suits that better.

What producers say

There are no reviews focused on BBO Riffs yet; reviewers of the BBO 2.0 bundle as a whole were positive.

Sound On Sound (Dave Stewart, July 2026) gave BBO 2.0 five stars, crediting the regrouping into seven family-based packs, access to all mic positions and the simpler Flow interface.
Sample Library Review (November 2025) called the bundle "Instantly Epic!" and praised its "high-octane, easy to use and flexible scoring", but gave no pack-by-pack detail.
