What it does
Free Delay is the delay in Venn Audio's Free Suite, described as a compact delay for rhythmic repeats, vocal throws and spatial depth.
- Delay time: set in note steps such as 16ths or in milliseconds.
- Character: aimed at a "vintage tape delay effect", according to Bedroom Producers Blog's launch coverage.
- Uses: rhythmic repeats, vocal throws and adding depth to a mix.
- Light and resizable: the developer calls the suite "performant, light weight, resizeable, zero fuss"; version 1.5 rewrote the back end for performance and stability.
- Part of a set: it pairs with Free Reverb and Free Convolve in the same suite for space and ambience.
Free Suite version 1.5.7 is free.

When to use it
Free Delay is a plain, free echo that fits a free mixing chain. Compared with EchoBoy, it has no range of modelled tape, analog and digital styles or groove controls. Valhalla Delay and Timeless 3 offer many more modes, filters and modulation options, but both cost money. Free Delay is the simpler choice when you just need timed repeats.
- Best for: simple synced echoes and vocal throws on a zero budget.
- Genres: any.
- Look elsewhere if: you want tape, analog or creative delay modes (EchoBoy, Valhalla Delay) or deep modulation and filtering (Timeless 3).
