What it does
Valhalla DSP pitches Freq Echo as "perfect for dub, Dr. Who, and all of your psychedelic needs". It combines a Bode-style frequency shifter with an analog echo emulation.
- Frequency shifter: a Bode-style shifter in the echo's feedback path, so each repeat moves further up or down in frequency.
- Range of effects: from subtle chorusing and double-tracking to barberpole phasing and flanging, endless glissandos and runaway echoes.
- Echo: analog echo emulation with low- and high-cut filtering on the repeats.
- Self-documenting: hover over a control to read its tooltip at the bottom of the plugin.
It's free; the current version is 1.2.8.

When to use it
Freq Echo is a free, specialist delay. It doesn't try to compete with Soundtoys EchoBoy, Valhalla Delay or FabFilter Timeless 3 as an all-round echo; its frequency shifter turns repeats into spirals, phasing and sci-fi sweeps that the others don't focus on. For a clean or tape-style everyday delay, Valhalla Delay is the natural step up from the same developer.
- Best for: dub and psychedelic echoes, sci-fi and sound-design effects, thickening with subtle shifts, and runaway feedback moments.
- Genres: dub, reggae, psych, ambient, experimental, electronic and film/TV sound design.
- Look elsewhere if: you want musical, in-tune repeats with tape or analog colour; frequency shifting makes repeats inharmonic.
- Tip: keep the shift amount very small for chorus and double-tracking, then push it and the feedback for barberpole sweeps.
What producers say
Widely recommended as a free plugin with a character no other delay quite has.
- Tape Op (John Baccigaluppi, 2016) noted it "can do some freaky effects" by combining a Bode frequency shifter with analog echo and feedback.
- Production Expert (Mike Thornton, 2024) gathered users' views; one called it "unlike anything else I have, free or paid-for", and another recommended it for infinite-delay sound design.
