What it does

BITPUNK is a JMG Sound bit-manipulation effect, sold by United Plugins, built around swapping bits between two signals. The developer says it can go "from subtle sonic magic to all-out degradation."

Processing is 64-bit at any sample rate, and the resizable interface is photorealistic 3D. It comes with free lifetime updates and the Synthpunk preset pack, and there is a free 15-day trial.

When to use it

BITPUNK is the pick for glitchy, broken digital textures, especially when you want to scramble two sounds together. Compared with Decimort 2, which recreates the grit of vintage samplers, it is harsher and less predictable, with bit swapping and morphing Decimort doesn't have. Unlike Trash or Saturn 2, it isn't a general distortion for warming or driving parts; most of its sounds are deliberately digital. It is also more complex to learn than a simple crusher, so it rewards experiments more than quick fixes.

What producers say

The one full review found it unique and fun for experiments but pricey and hard to tame.
