What it does
Zen Master is Unison's free lo-fi multi-effect: five macro knobs that each add one classic lo-fi move. Unison pitches it at producers of any budget or experience who want "unique lo-fi vibes" fast.
- Hypnosis: a detune and stereo-width effect that spreads and smears the sound.
- Imbalance: tape-modeled pitch wobble for warped, vintage movement.
- Electrify: a bitcrusher for digital grit and reduced resolution.
- Noise: blends in vinyl noise, crackle or white noise.
- Ascend: a reverb Unison describes as spacious, warm and clean.
- Mix and safety: a blend control for parallel processing, filtering and an internal limiter to prevent clipping, according to Bedroom Producers Blog.
- Interface: an animated graphic with the five knobs on one screen; the signal path is fixed, so the effects can't be reordered.
It is free with a perpetual, royalty-free license and lifetime updates. 50 extra presets are unlocked by sharing on social media.
When to use it
Zen Master is the quick, free option for lo-fi colour: five knobs, no menus, and a usable result in seconds. Compared with RC-20 Retro Color it has no per-module controls, no flux or distortion sections and no reorderable chain, but it costs nothing. Against TAIP it is far less refined as tape saturation; its wobble and crush are effects rather than a tape model you can mix with. It suits sketching and beginners more than detailed degradation work.
- Best for: quick lo-fi wobble, crackle, crunch and space on keys, guitar loops, samples and drums.
- Genres: lo-fi hip-hop, chillhop, bedroom pop and beat-making.
- Look elsewhere if: you want control over each stage or a flexible signal chain; RC-20 Retro Color goes much further, and TAIP is the better pick for realistic tape colour.
- Tip: use the blend control for parallel processing so the dry signal keeps its punch under the lo-fi layer.
What producers say
Reviewers see it as a decent, basic freebie rather than a must-have.
- Bedroom Producers Blog called it a straightforward lo-fi multi-effect with handy blend, filter and limiter features, but "not an original concept" and "worth trying if you like lo-fi effects."
- KVR users rate it 3 out of 5 from 1 review (version 1), liking its light-hearted take on familiar effects but finding it "pretty basic."
- Criticisms: a fixed, non-reorderable signal path, an interface that recalls Delay Lama, and the social-sharing hoop for the bonus presets.
