What it does
Chord Genie is Unison's one-click chord progression generator for producers who don't read music. Unison's pitch: "Create Pro-Level Chord Progressions In 1 Click Without Music Theory."
- One-click generation: AI-generated major and minor progressions; Unison says it works in every genre, from hip-hop to house to pop.
- Key and length: selectors for the key and length of the progression.
- Piano roll: a built-in piano roll with full editing of the generated chords.
- Preset saver: store progressions you like for later.
- Export: drag and drop or export MIDI to any synth or instrument in your DAW.
- Royalty-free: generated progressions can be used commercially.
It is on sale as a one-time purchase with lifetime access and updates, and has a 60-day money-back guarantee instead of a trial.
When to use it
Chord Genie is the pick for the cheapest, simplest way to get chord ideas into a DAW as MIDI. Compared with Unison's own MIDI Wizard, it only writes chords and lacks the genre styles, melodies and other parts, so it works best as a budget entry point. Compared with Scaler 3 or Captain Chords, it has far fewer theory and voicing tools, but there is almost nothing to learn. Unlike the meters and reference tools in the site's utility category, it is a songwriting aid rather than a mixing tool.
- Best for: beginners and beatmakers who want quick chord sketches to build a track on.
- Genres: hip-hop, trap, pop, R&B and electronic.
- Look elsewhere if: you want genre styles, melodies or real music theory tools; MIDI Wizard, Scaler 3 or Captain Chords do more.
- Tip: treat the results as a sketchpad: drag the MIDI out and edit voicings and rhythm in your DAW.
What producers say
Independent coverage is thin; AltWire saw it as a cheap idea starter rather than a full tool.
- AltWire called it "not a bad offering" at its low price, but described it as "MIDI Wizard Lite".
- Criticisms: AltWire found generation works only by key, making progressions "more sketchpad than song-ready", and redundant if you own MIDI Wizard.
