Bass Dragon is an AI bassline and 808 generator from Unison that writes genre-specific bass parts in 30 genres and can match them to existing chords, with a built-in synth and sampler.
It is on sale for $67 (regular $297) as VST2, VST3, AU and AAX for macOS and Windows.
Best for: Bass. Genres: Hip-Hop & Trap, Electronic & EDM, Pop.
Keywords: bass, synths, AI/machine learning, perpetual licence, 808s, AAX, creative, destructive, preset-driven, rent-to-own, samples & loops, utility.
What it does
Bass Dragon writes basslines and 808 patterns in a chosen genre and plays them with its own synth and sampler. It can follow a chord progression you give it, so the generated bass fits the song.
- Generation: basslines and 808 patterns in 30 genres, plus a hidden "???" genre that fuses all 30.
- Chord detection: drag in your own MIDI progression and it detects the chords, or start from the stock progressions.
- Built-in sound: a synth with 200 factory presets and an audio sampler for one-shots and 808s, so any sample can become a playable bass patch.
- 9 effects: Mangle, Destroy, Bitcrush, Phase, Chorus, Flange, Echo, Space and Verb.
- Editing: a piano roll with velocity, quantize and swing controls, plus a preset saver for your own banks.
- Routing and export: it can drive external synths and instrument plugins, links with MIDI Wizard to follow its progressions, and exports by drag and drop as MIDI or audio.
It is sold as a one-time purchase on sale, or rent-to-own in eight payments; it has also been part of the Unison Plugin Pass subscription. It comes with free lifetime updates and a 60-day money-back guarantee instead of a demo.
When to use it
Bass Dragon is the pick when you want a bass part written for you that already fits your chords. AltWire found it more immediate than Mixed In Key's Captain bass tools and Pilot, with a stronger sampler for turning any sound into a bass patch. Compared with a synth such as Serum 2 or Vital, it writes the part but offers far less sound design. It works best alongside Unison's MIDI Wizard, which feeds it chord progressions directly.
- Best for: 808 and bassline ideas that follow a chord progression, and quick song sketches.
- Genres: hip-hop, trap, pop and electronic.
- Look elsewhere if: you write your own bass parts and only need a bass sound; Serum 2 or Vital are more useful.
- Tip: link it to MIDI Wizard 2 so the bassline follows the generated chords automatically.
What producers say
The one detailed review counted it among the best of Unison's generators.
- AltWire (Derek Oswald, 2025) called it "one of my favorites" and the most versatile bass tool it tested, praising the sampler and the link with MIDI Wizard.
- Also noted: AltWire found it encourages experimental sound design and listed no specific criticisms.
