What it does
Virtual Drummer PHAT 2 ("Funk-a-Licious & Groovy") is UJAM's played-for-you drummer for funky and urban grooves, covering retro soul through G-funk. You pick a style and trigger phrases from the keyboard rather than programming beats.
- Styles and phrases: 30 styles with 720 phrases, including 650 new grooves in version 2, plus 100 presets.
- Kits: five kits built for funky, grooving drum tracks, with elements mixed from four drum types.
- Mix presets: six character presets from professional sound designers, plus kit editing and a master section.
- Performance controls: swing, feel and humanize, with individual volume for kick, snare and other kit pieces.
- Multi-outs: separate outputs per drum for mixing in the DAW.
- MIDI drag and drop: drag phrases into the DAW to edit the notes in detail.
When to use it
PHAT 2 is the quick option for funky, hip-hop-leaning live drum grooves when you want a finished-sounding beat in minutes. Compared with EZdrummer 3 or Addictive Drums 2, it has far fewer kits and less editing, but its styles are tightly focused on funk, soul and G-funk and it is often very cheap on sale. Superior Drummer 3 goes much further into mixing, mic control and editing, at a much higher price. Unlike XO or Battery 4, it plays recorded phrases instead of letting you program a drum machine step by step.
- Best for: funky hip-hop, G-funk and soul drum grooves without programming.
- Genres: hip-hop, funk, soul and R&B.
- Look elsewhere if: you want deep kit editing (EZdrummer 3, Superior Drummer 3) or electronic drum-machine programming (XO, Battery 4).
What producers say
Feedback is thin; the one user review we found was lukewarm.
- KVR users rate it 2 out of 5 from 1 review, finding that "after an hour or so you've heard everything it does".
- Criticisms: that reviewer found the presets repetitive and the self-playing approach limiting, though the controls are simple.
