What it does

NEON is UJAM's drummer for "Punchy Nu Disco Drums," inspired by 1970s disco records. The idea is a human drummer's feel with a tight, snappy, machine-like punch that sits on top of a modern dance mix.

Five kits: 1970s Rogers and Gretsch kicks and toms, a DW kick, 1980s Sonor Phonic toms, and snares from Ludwig (Supraphonic and Acrolite), Rogers Dynasonic, Tama Mastercraft and PDP, with Paiste, Zildjian and Sabian cymbals.
Claps: live-recorded trio hand claps, with mono and stereo room and overhead mics.
Styles and patterns: 30 styles across nu disco, dance-pop, disco house, synthwave and 80s pop, with 23 phrases each (690 patterns), each triggered from a single MIDI key.
Real/Glam slider: moves the kit from a natural acoustic sound to a processed, electronic one.
Mix presets: six mixes from dry and snappy to crunchy and slammed, plus 100 factory presets.
Recording chain: close mics on every drum plus overhead and room pairs, through Neve 1073 and 1081 and Universal Audio 4-710 preamps, a Summit Audio EQP 200 and a vintage Studer console.
Workflow: MIDI drag and drop into the DAW and separate outputs for individual drums.

When to use it

NEON is a focused tool for one job: tight disco and dance-pop drums, played from single keys, with very little setup. Compared with EZdrummer 3 and Addictive Drums 2, it has far fewer kits and less editing, but its Real/Glam slider and mix presets get you a finished, pre-processed disco sound in seconds. It covers much less ground than Superior Drummer 3, which is built for detailed mixing and editing of acoustic kits. Unlike drum machines such as XO or Battery 4, it plays live-feel acoustic grooves rather than steps you program yourself. It is cheaper than the big drum suites, and the full 7-day trial lets you check the style fit first.

Best for: nu disco, disco house, funky house and dance-pop drum parts with a live feel.
