What it does

HOT, "The Drums on the Radio", delivers punchy, processed drum grooves for contemporary pop. It is a pre-mixed drummer you play from single keys, with one main control that moves the kit from natural to machine-like.

Five kits: BOOM, WAVE, VANILLA, FRESH and BRITTLE.
Styles and phrases: 30 styles from hip-hop to electronic, with 23 patterns each, for 690 playable phrases, plus over 100 global presets.
Juice FX: blends the drums from a natural acoustic sound to a processed, drum-machine character.
Seven channels: kick, snare, clap, hi-hat, toms, rides and crashes. The extra clap channel layers claps on top of the snares, a common pop sound.
Mix presets: six presets, each a multi-bus effect chain with a different overall sound.
Reverb and master: six reverb modes with a level control, and a master section with Saturate/Grit, a Maximizer and a volume slider with level meter.
Workflow: MIDI drag and drop into the DAW and a resizable interface. The MIDI phrases and sounds are royalty-free.

A free, fully working trial is offered.

When to use it

HOT is built for speed in modern pop: grooves that already sound processed and radio-ready. Compared with EZdrummer 3 and Addictive Drums 2, it gives up most of the kit editing and natural acoustic range, but the Juice FX control and mix presets get a finished pop sound with almost no mixing. Unlike XO or Battery 4, it plays performed phrases rather than drum-machine steps you program yourself, though Juice FX can push it towards a machine sound. Within UJAM's drummers it is the modern pop one, while LEGEND covers dry 70s drums and NEON covers disco. Its separate claps channel is useful for the clap-on-snare sound common in current pop.

Best for: modern pop, pop-R&B and hip-hop-leaning drum grooves that need to sound finished quickly.
Genres: pop, hip-hop, R&B and electronic.
Look elsewhere if: you need natural acoustic drums with full control over the kit (Addictive Drums 2 or EZdrummer 3), or you want to program beats from your own samples (XO or Battery 4).
