What it does

PIXEL is a Usynth for "Retro Gaming Adventures", built on a retro game multi-synthesis engine inspired by 80s and 90s game consoles. UJAM made it with composer David Wise, known for Donkey Kong Country, and sells it on the idea of "No synth skills needed!"

When to use it

PIXEL is the quick way to 16-bit and arcade-style game music: pick a preset or phrase, turn the Vari knobs and you have a melody, bass or bleep. Unlike Plogue chipsounds, which emulates specific sound chips in detail, it aims for a broad console-era feel with built-in phrases, so it suits soundtrack sketches more than strict chiptune. Compared with Vital or Serum 2, you can't design a square-wave patch from scratch, but you get finished retro parts in seconds. It is also far smaller and cheaper than a big library synth like Omnisphere 3.

What producers say

Plugin Boutique buyers rate it 4.6 out of 5 from 213 ratings, with fast results praised and the preset-bound design criticized.
