What it does

RETROCRAFT offers "Retro Effects Reimagined": an all-in-one effect plugin, not an instrument, for adding vintage character, lo-fi texture and analog warmth to vocals and instruments. A three-stage gear chain colours the sound, and six effect modules add movement, space and glitches.

Gear chain: an Amplifier (tube or transistor), a Player (from dictaphone and cassette to vinyl) and a Speaker (from megaphone and telephone to car stereo).
Lo-Fi and Instability: digital distortion, crunch and ring modulation, plus vibrato and tape or vinyl wobble and wear.
Modulation: chorus, flanger and phaser algorithms.
Delay and Reverb: six delay types and six reverb types.
Chop: six glitch and rhythmic chopping variants.
Bottom strip: a compressor, filters, Doubling, a Highlighter and a Super Glue dynamics control, plus wet/dry mix and undo.
Presets: 150 presets in categories such as Aging, Vocals, Retro Gear and Glitchy, and a Surprise Dice for random starting points.

Latency is low, about 1.5 ms per Sound On Sound, so it can be used while tracking. A 7-day full trial needs no credit card.

When to use it

RETROCRAFT is the better pick when you want one plugin that both colours a sound and adds full effects. Compared with RC-20 and Super VHS it adds delay, reverb, modulation and chop modules on top of the vintage colouring, so a whole retro chain fits in one window. Lifeline Expanse covers similar ground with a stronger focus on texture layers, while RETROCRAFT leans on amp, player and speaker emulation. Next to Soundtoys Effect Rack it is simpler and preset-driven, with less depth per effect but a lower price.

Best for: vintage and lo-fi colouring on vocals, keys, guitars, drums and loops, from subtle warmth to obvious ear candy.
Genres: lo-fi, hip-hop, pop and electronic.
Look elsewhere if: you just want a single vintage texture knob (Super VHS is simpler) or a faithful channel-strip emulation.
Tip: Sound On Sound suggests using the free seven-day trial, since hands-on use shows more than the demo videos.

What producers say

Sound On Sound's review was positive, with value best for existing UJAM customers who get loyalty discounts.

Sound On Sound (John Walden, October 2026) called it a "great-sounding plug-in with lots of creative potential" and liked the intuitive layout.
Praised: it works on drums, bass, synths, guitars and vocals, handles both bold effects and subtle vintage colour, and its Amplifier block adds convincing analog warmth.
Reservations: no hard criticisms, but the reviewer felt it doesn't replace dedicated channel-strip emulations.
