What it does

Beatmaker KANDY is a drum instrument in UJAM's Beatmaker series, sold as "Your shortcut to modern pop music drums". UJAM aims it at tight, heavily processed drums for pop, electro and EDM that are "clean, bright, and ready for radio", played as ready-made patterns from the keyboard.

Kits: 10 processed drum kits with 16 instruments each.
Patterns: 20 styles with 23 patterns each, 460 in all, triggered from the keyboard.
Sweetness control: one slider that moves several parameters under the hood to set how much polish and presence the drums have in the mix.
Kit and Kick-Snare sliders: Kit adjusts multiband compression and transient shaping; Kick-Snare balances downbeats against backbeats for builds and fades.
Mix section: assignable character presets with Amount and Beat Intensity controls.
Editing and master: edit individual drum sources, balance snare against clap, re-pitch the kick to the song's key, and set filter sweeps, ambience and saturation.
Outputs and MIDI: multiple outputs for mixing drums in your DAW, and MIDI drag and drop; all phrases and sounds are royalty-free.

When to use it

KANDY is the pick when you want finished, chart-style pop drums with the processing already done. Compared with XO and Battery 4, it gives far less freedom to build kits and program beats, but its kits come compressed, shaped and bright, so they sit in a pop mix straight away. Nerve and Battery 4 let you design that processing yourself. Within the Beatmaker range it is the glossy modern pop option, where CIRCUITS goes for vintage analog machines and HUSTLE for 808 trap.

Best for: glossy pop, future bass and electro-pop beats for songwriting and fast production.
Genres: pop, future bass, electro and EDM.
Look elsewhere if: you want to design kits and program beats from scratch; XO or Battery 4 give more freedom.
Tip: re-pitch the kick to the song's key and ride the Kick-Snare slider for transitions into a chorus.
