What it does
Equalizer 4 is an all-purpose EQ that doubles as a dynamic EQ. ToneBoosters describes it as "the modern spectral shaping tool for all EQ tasks."
- 16 filter sections: more than 30 filter types, each section non-linear and able to run static or dynamic.
- Dynamic EQ: upward and downward compression and upward expansion per band, so a band can tame peaks or bring out transients.
- External side-chain: each dynamic filter can react to an external side-chain signal.
- Digital or analog: run the filters in a clean digital mode or with analog circuit simulation for colour and warmth.
- Analyzer with AI assistant: an integrated spectrum analyzer, plus an assistant that suggests EQ settings based on the type of material.
- Auto make-up and channels: automatic level make-up per filter section, up to 16 channels for spatial audio, and sample rates up to 384 kHz.

When to use it
Equalizer 4 is a strong value pick for everyday static and dynamic EQ. Compared with FabFilter Pro-Q 4, it covers 16 dynamic bands, side-chain and EQ suggestions at a fraction of the price, but it has no linear-phase mode or EQ matching. It goes further than the free TDR Nova, which has fewer bands, and adds analog circuit simulation that Waves F6 lacks. ToneBoosters' own Equalizer Pro is the step up if you need linear phase, EQ matching and adaptive filters.
- Best for: corrective and dynamic EQ on vocals, instruments, buses and masters, and multichannel work up to 16 channels.
- Genres: any style.
- Look elsewhere if: you need linear-phase filters or EQ matching (Equalizer Pro or Pro-Q 4), or a simple free dynamic EQ is enough (TDR Nova).
What producers say
The few user reviews are all enthusiastic, praising its accuracy, flexibility and fair price.
- KVR users rate it 5 out of 5 from 4 reviews (2021 to 2023). One called it "easy to use and trustworthy".
- Dynamic EQ: one KVR reviewer said that adding compression at chosen frequencies makes it "a one-stop solution."
- Criticisms: none were raised in the KVR reviews.
