What it does

Firechild is Tone Empire's vari-mu tube compressor, modelled on the classic 1950s broadcast compressor often called the king of compressors. Tone Empire calls it "the fairest child of the vari-mu dynasty", built with dynamic convolution that samples real hardware at several gain and compression stages.

It comes with free updates. A 15-day full-version trial is available with no feature limits.

When to use it

Firechild is the better pick when you want vari-mu glue with more control than the original hardware offers. Compared with UA's Fairchild Tube Limiter Collection and IK Multimedia's Model 670, it adds Knee, Bias and Mix controls, sidechain filters and a clean Off mode. Compared with Analog Obsession's free MuChild, it gives three tube flavours to choose from, though it costs more and is heavier on CPU. Unlike Pro-C 3, it has no detailed metering or visual display; it is a character tool rather than a surgical one, and suits buses more than every channel.

What producers say

Reviewers see it as a characterful, good-value vari-mu emulation, with CPU load the main drawback.
