What it does
World in Gourd is billed as "The deepest sampled ancient Chinese Hulusi in the world." The hulusi is a clarinet-like instrument favored by ethnic minorities in southern China, with a mellow tone traditionally used for love songs and dance accompaniment.
- Three tunings: bass, alto and treble hulusi.
- Samples: 1,829 samples at 44.1 kHz/24-bit, recorded with five mics and mixed to Yin, Yang and far stereo channels.
- Articulations: mordent, finger popping, trill, flutter, vibrato, staccato and glissando, controllable by MIDI CC.
- Legato: regular, fast and popping legato.
- Effects: compressor, EQ, chorus, ping-pong delay and convolution reverb from historic Chinese locations such as the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army.
It is a plugin, not a Kontakt library.

When to use it
World in Gourd fills a gap that general libraries don't. Unlike orchestral packages on this site such as Spitfire BBC Symphony Orchestra Core and EastWest Hollywood Orchestra Opus Edition, which offer Western woodwinds like the clarinet, it has the hulusi's distinctive folk tone. Choose World in Gourd for authentic southern-Chinese folk color at a modest price.
- Best for: gentle folk melodies and East Asian color in film, game and ambient music.
- Genres: cinematic, ambient, folk and world.
- Look elsewhere if: you need Western woodwinds or a broad ethnic collection.
- Standout: three hulusi sizes with popping legato and historic-site reverbs in one plugin.
