OwnTHD
by Three-Body Technology · Saturation · Analog harmonic distortion processor
Not rated yet
A saturator for building your own analog 'color', with nine classic equipment models that reproduce only the non-linear behavior of the gear.
Four drive stages, adjustable bias, feedback and depth, a movable 'sweet spot', and blendable solid-state, tube and tape circuit modules let you go past a straight emulation.
Best for: Drum Bus, Vocals, Mix Bus, Acoustic Instruments. Genres: all genres.
Keywords: solid-state, tape, tube, classic, full mix, spacious, vocals, British console, bus processing, hardware emulation, acoustic guitar, drum bus, drums, mix bus, mixing, punchy, single-band.
What it does
OwnTHD is an "analog feeling processor"; the name means building your "Own" THD (total harmonic distortion). Rather than aiming at a perfect clone, it models the non-linear behavior of classic gear so you can, for example, get the color of a '2A'-type compressor without any compression.
- Nine equipment models: classic preamps, consoles and processors (with names such as N-Pre, 4K, 2A, A8, S-Pre and VOC) used as a starting point.
- Customization: four drive knobs set the amount of color, with adjustable bias, positive or negative feedback, and depth.
- Sweet spot: move each model's characteristic emphasis, such as the punchy lows of the 4K type, into other frequency ranges.
- Circuit modules: blend ideal solid-state, tube and tape simulations in series without the noise or impedance problems of real chains.

When to use it
OwnTHD fits when you want console and outboard harmonic color without the compression or EQ of the original gear, with detailed control over how the distortion is built. Soundtoys Decapitator and FabFilter Saturn 2 are broader saturation tools, and Sonimus Satson or Black Box Analog Design HG-2 give a fixed hardware-style color where OwnTHD lets you build it.
- Best for: adding analog-style harmonics to drum buses, vocals, acoustic guitar and full mixes.
- Genres: electronic (including dubstep, per the developer's demos), pop, rock and hip-hop.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a one-knob saturator.
- Standout: combining equipment models with solid-state, tube and tape modules in adjustable proportions.
