What it does
Vinylizer V2 is a vinyl and lo-fi texture generator from Thenatan. It is played as an instrument: you hold a note on a MIDI keyboard and it plays a mix of noise layers for as long as you hold it, to add the "warm sound and drive of old vinyl records" under a track.
- Nine layers: noise sources including Rainy Street, Hum, Hiss and Ambient (Bedroom Producers Blog also mentions rain and 8-bit), each with its own gain.
- Played by MIDI: the texture follows the note you play, so its pitch can be moved up or down.
- Presets: 50 or more texture presets.
- Shaping: high- and low-pass filters and an ADSR envelope to fade the texture in and out.
- Movement: a built-in LFO for modulating the sound.
- Reverb: a built-in reverb with a classic character.
Version 2. No demo is mentioned; it was given away free for a short time in May 2022.
When to use it
Vinylizer V2 is the pick when you want a vinyl or ambient noise bed as its own part, played and mixed separately from the music. Compared with RC-20 Retro Color, it only generates noise; it does not add wobble, distortion or tone colour to the track itself. In exchange it has nine separate layers with their own levels, an envelope, and pitch control from MIDI. Unlike the effect-style noise in RC-20, it needs a MIDI note to sound, so you write it as a clip. It costs about half as much as RC-20.
- Best for: vinyl crackle, hum, hiss, rain and street ambience under lo-fi beats, intros and interludes.
- Genres: lo-fi, hip-hop, trap and ambient.
- Look elsewhere if: you want the noise and the vintage tone applied to the track in one effect (RC-20 Retro Color).
- Tip: play the texture on a note in your track's key; because it follows the MIDI pitch, the noise bed sits better with the music (Bedroom Producers Blog).
