What it does
GRRR is a beat-reactive distortion for growl and "snarling monster" sounds on bass, vocals and drums. Its four engines follow the dynamics of the track in real time, so the growl moves with each hit without drawing automation.
- TRASH: wavefolding, decimation, ring modulation and a throat-rattle effect, all on one knob.
- TALK: vowel-like articulation that speeds up on each hit and slurs back down between hits.
- WUB: a resonant filter with wide, deep sweeps that react quickly to the beat.
- SCREECH: a metallic resonator that sweeps from a low growl up to a high scream.
- Beat detection: the engines respond to the incoming signal's dynamics rather than to a fixed LFO.
- Master section: a Sub control to add low end and a Dense control to thicken the result.
- Presets: 20+ factory presets in groups such as Ghost Throat, Basslines, Vocal Growls, Drum Destruction and Riddim Lasers.
Version 1.0.0 (per KVR). It runs with zero latency and low CPU use.
When to use it
GRRR is the quick, cheap pick for growl and talking-bass effects that follow the beat with almost no setup. Compared with Saturn 2, it has far fewer distortion types and no modulation routing, but its beat-reactive engines get a moving growl without drawing envelopes or LFOs. Unlike Rift, which builds distortion from chained, modulated algorithms, GRRR gives you four fixed engines with one knob each. It also costs a fraction of either.
- Best for: fast growl, wub, vowel and screech effects on basslines, vocals and drum loops.
- Genres: dubstep, riddim, drill, trap and EDM.
- Look elsewhere if: you want to design distortion and modulation from scratch (Rift or Saturn 2), or you need Pro Tools support.
