What it does

Aura is a granular texture effect from Thenatan. It uses a particle generator to break incoming audio into grains, with the aim to "transform any audio into breathtaking cinematic textures" without detailed grain programming.

Granular engine: an "advanced particle generator" that turns any input into granular textures and soundscapes.
Pitch and panic: a pitch-shifting slider and a panic button, both added in version 1.0.1.
LFOs: built-in LFOs in Sync and MS modes, used for tremolo and panning movement.
Effects: reverb, compressor, panner and tremolo after the granular stage.

When to use it

Aura is the simpler choice when you want a cinematic pad or ambience from a loop quickly, without learning a granular engine. Compared with Graindad, it gives far less control: no grain sequencing or detailed per-grain settings are listed, only the particle generator, pitch, LFOs and effects. Compared with Portal, it lists no preset morphing or deep modulation routing. On the other hand it has a reverb, compressor and tremolo built in, so the output is often usable without other plugins. The case for it is speed and ease of use rather than depth.
