What it does
TDR SimuLathe REF offers "virtual disk mastering for referencing and early quality control." It simulates the complete disk mastering process so mastering engineers can check how a master will behave when cut to vinyl before it reaches a cutting room.
- Virtual lathe: a precise disk cutting lathe model with four representative configurations, plus multi-side and multi-disk support.
- Filters: a classic disk mastering filter section with highpass, lowpass and elliptical filtering.
- Metering: groove excursion, width, velocity, gain on disk and stereo width meters, with heatmaps for excursion, width, velocity and land and a groove microscope.
- Pickups: three physically modeled turntable pickups for monitoring and test cuts.
- Reports: generates HTML project reports and supports imperial and metric units.

When to use it
SimuLathe REF has no direct equivalent on the site. Unlike Insight 2 and Tonal Balance Control 3, which analyze spectrum and loudness, and iZotope Vinyl, which adds a vinyl sound as an effect, it models a cutting lathe and groove geometry. Choose REF to check vinyl-readiness of a master and learn the tradeoffs; step up to SimuLathe CUT if you operate a real lathe.
- Best for: mastering engineers preparing vinyl masters and checking sibilance, low-end width and groove velocity issues early.
- Genres: any music headed for vinyl.
- Look elsewhere if: you cut lacquers yourself and need groove limiters and system-matched settings; that is the CUT edition.
- Standout: listening to a simulated pickup playback of your master before paying for a test cut.
What producers say
Sound On Sound's review of the SimuLathe family found it a faithful emulation that suits both professionals and curious learners.
- Sound On Sound (2023) Hugh Robjohns called it a "precise emulation of every aspect of vinyl cutting" and noted full technical data with a 3D groove view.
- Who it suits: the review's verdict says it lets professionals "sandbox" the mastering process without the expense of test cuts.
- Gripe: there was "currently no means of exporting the synthesized pickup audio output."
