What it does

TDR Molotok is a free dynamics compressor from Tokyo Dawn Labs, described as "a simplified version of Molot GE covering a wide range of colourful compression flavours." Its name means "small hammer" in Russian, and while it does not emulate a vintage unit, its behavior was inspired by the quirks of classic compressors.

The current version is 1.0.7. It is free.

When to use it

Molotok sits between clean workhorse compressors and colored vintage models. Where TDR Kotelnikov, also free from the same developer, is the transparent choice for buses and mastering, Molotok is for adding punch and color. It has less control and metering than the paid alternatives The Glue and Pro-C 3, and it lacks the saturation, tone controls, limiter and M/S processing that Molot GE, the full version, adds.

What producers say

Users like its color on drums and in parallel compression, while some fans of the original Molot felt the free version was too stripped down.
