DUNE 3 is a polyphonic software synth from Synapse Audio that combines virtual analog, wavetable and FM synthesis.
Two large oscillator stacks, dual multimode filters and two nine-slot effects buses come with over 1,000 patches, for €199 (about $226).

What it does
DUNE 3 is the third version of Synapse Audio's flagship hybrid synth, billed as "The best DUNE ever, now in Full HD". Each voice can mix virtual analog, wavetable and FM oscillators, with heavy unison and a built-in wavetable editor.
- Oscillators: two stacks of up to 32 oscillators each plus a third oscillator, in VA, wavetable and FM types; 8x unison gives up to 520 oscillators per note.
- Swarm mode: a stacking mode that adds density and movement more cheaply than high unison counts.
- Filters: dual analog-modeled zero-delay-feedback multimode filters with a Balance control and serial or parallel routing, with inserts such as a formant/vowel filter and phaser.
- Modulation: a modulation matrix covering synth and effects parameters, four graphical multi-stage envelopes (MSEG), three LFOs and a white/pink noise source.
- Arpeggiators: two arpeggiator units with classic modes, random mode, arp hold and MIDI file playback.
- Effects: two master FX buses with nine effects each, including distortion, chorus, phaser, delay, reverb with a Shimmer Hall, and a 4-band parametric EQ.
- Wavetable Editor: draw waves, edit segments and partials, use formulas, and import or export WAV files.
- Presets: over 1,000 factory patches, and it loads DUNE 2 sounds.

When to use it
DUNE 3 is a strong pick for big, polished supersaw leads, pads and basses with a light CPU load. Compared with Serum 2 it has a simpler wavetable side and no sample or granular engines, but its VA oscillators, unison and dual filter give it a warmer, more analog-leaning character. It covers more synthesis types than Sylenth1, while keeping a similarly direct layout. Next to Vital it costs money and has fewer visual modulation tools, but users often single out its sound and its low CPU use.
- Best for: trance and EDM leads, lush pads, fat basses and arps, and dense layered patches.
- Genres: trance, EDM, synthwave, pop, hip-hop and soundtrack work.
- Look elsewhere if: you want deep FM (Phase Plant or a dedicated FM synth), granular sounds (Pigments 7), or a fast visual wavetable editor (Serum 2 or Vital).
- Tip: try Swarm mode instead of maxing out unison for thick, moving sounds at lower CPU cost.

Users rate it very highly for sound and ease of use; criticisms are minor.
- KVR users rate it 4.96 out of 5 from 24 reviews, praising the rich, analog-like sound, the clear layout and the low CPU use; one (2022) wrote it "just sounds better than all the other synths".
- Computer Music (via MusicRadar, 2019) called it "up there with the very best sonically" and praised the Swarm mode, dual filter and effects.
- Criticisms: Computer Music found the FM basic and the Wavetable Editor laggy; KVR users want a better patch browser with keyword search, and note there is no granular engine.
