diffuse is a hybrid delay and reverb inspired by 1970s and 1980s hardware, pairing analog-style delay with vintage digital reverb.
Its main trick is morphing between delays and reverbs with a few macro controls for smearing, echoes and damping; it costs €45 (about $51).
Best for: Guitars, Keys & Synths, Vocals, Sound Design. Genres: Ambient & Cinematic, Electronic & EDM, Rock & Indie, Lo-Fi.
Keywords: dub, 70s, 80s, digital classic, inspired by, rhythmic, tape, ambience, analog-sounding, electric guitar, mixing, pumping, synths, classic, freeze, macro controls, non-linear, simple, smooth, sound design, pads, tape echo, vintage, vocals, wide.
What it does
diffuse is Surreal Machines' hybrid delay-reverb, inspired by delay and reverb hardware of the 1970s and 1980s. It joins an analog-modelled delay to a reverb design from early digital units, so you can "morph between delays and reverbs" and find the sounds between them. It is the second half of the Dub Machines pair, next to the Modnetic tape echo.
- Analog/digital hybrid: an analog-modelled delay line feeds a classic early-digital reverb structure, with nonlinear processing in the path.
- Morph from echo to reverb: the Size and Diffuse dials set how the delay taps are spread and blurred. Low settings give discrete echoes; around 80% diffusion the taps smear into a reverb with a phased quality.
- Pattern and Repeat: a Pattern menu offers nine rhythmic variations on the delay timing, and Repeat sets the echo rhythm.
- Hold: freezes the current sound while you keep changing Repeat for rhythmic effects.
- Regen: feedback goes up to 150% for runaway, saturated dub repeats.
- Input as a send: the input gain works like an aux send, so you can automate dub throws into the effect.
- Tone and movement: stereo modulation, Low and High damping, smooth tape-style delay-time changes, and a Pump control that keeps the dry signal from being buried by the tail.
The current version is 1.3.2. The developer sells it alone or in the Dub Machines bundle with Modnetic. A demo is available.

When to use it
diffuse is the pick when you want one effect that slides between dub echo and reverb, with plenty of grit and rhythm on the way. Compared with Valhalla Supermassive it has far fewer modes, but its Pattern, Hold and Regen controls make it more of a playable dub tool. Next to Valhalla VintageVerb it gives less control over the reverb itself and no clean, modern colour, but it does echoes and the space between echo and reverb much better. It is not a room or hall reverb in the way FabFilter Pro-R 2 is, so it suits textures more than realistic spaces.
- Best for: smeared dub echoes, ambient pads, and guitar or synth textures that sit between delay and reverb.
- Genres: dub, ambient, electronic, experimental and indie.
- Look elsewhere if: you need surround (Pro-R 2), realistic rooms (Valhalla Room), or a huge range of algorithms (Supermassive).
- Tip: automate the input gain as a send to throw single words or snare hits into the effect, as with a dub mixing desk.
What producers say
The main published review calls it a great-sounding, well-priced echo and reverb combination.
- Ask.Audio (republished by Plugin Boutique) called it "a gorgeous sounding and highly useful echo/reverb combo", praising the streamlined three-section layout, the Pattern menu and the phased sound at high diffusion.
- Praised: the Pump control for keeping the dry sound clear, and the Hold button for rhythmic tricks.
- Criticisms: the review felt the filtering in the Dub Machines pair could be more powerful.
