Crack is a free, lightweight transient shaper from Surreal Machines for single drums and loops.
It adds a dry/wet blend, soft analog-modelled clipping, a custom limiter and a maximizer tuned for transient-rich material, and is light enough to use on many tracks.

What it does
Crack is Surreal Machines' free, single-band transient shaper, the little sibling of the multiband Impact. The developer calls it "a workhorse of a plugin": quick to set on one drum or a loop, and light on CPU.
- Attack: -15 to +15 dB. Positive values add punch and sharpen hits; negative values soften them and push them back.
- Sustain: -20 to +20 dB. Raise it for fuller tails, or cut it for a sharper, gated, crisper sound.
- Dynamics modes: Thru (no processing, so output can run hot), Clip (brickwall clipping for edge), Limiter (softens peaks, can pump when pushed) and Maximizer (levels the output).
- Gain and Amount: ±10 dB of gain in Thru, Clip and Limiter modes; in Maximizer mode it becomes an Amount control from 0 to 100%, with a gain reduction meter.
- Dry/Wet: 0 to 100% blend with the original signal, for parallel-style processing.
- Workflow: preset management, A/B comparison, meters on each knob and UI resizing up to 200%.

When to use it
Crack is the better pick when you want a free, simple attack and sustain shaper with a peak stage built in. Compared with Kilohearts' Transient Shaper, it adds clipping, limiting and a maximizer, so one plugin can both shape a hit and catch the peaks that boosting attack creates. It has less detection control than SPL Transient Designer Plus or Transgressor 3, and unlike Impact it works on the full signal only, with no bands. For a free tool its scope is good.
- Best for: quick punch on kicks and snares, tightening loops, cutting room ring by lowering sustain.
- Genres: hip-hop, electronic, rock and pop.
- Look elsewhere if: you need per-band control (Impact) or finer timing control (Transgressor 3).

Crack is seen as one of the better free transient shapers: simple, effective and light.
- Bedroom Producers Blog called it "one of the best free VST plugins" of 2020, praising that it gets the job done without gimmicks.
- KVR users have posted no rated reviews, but commenters called it "a must have" and a "really solid plugin".
