What it does

LM-7 is one of Steinberg's original VST instruments: a simple drum machine that plays a fixed set of built-in drum samples from MIDI. It came back in 2026 as part of the free Steinberg Classics collection.

Steinberg re-released it on 4 August 2026 as an updated plugin, part of the free Steinberg Classics collection that marks 30 years of VST, alongside Neon, CS-40, VB-1 and Karlette. It is free.

When to use it

LM-7 is a small, free retro drum box for quick beats and period sounds, not a modern drum production tool. Compared with Battery 4 and XO, it cannot load your own samples, layer sounds or shape them in depth. It is also far simpler than Steinberg's own Groove Agent 6, which adds kits, grooves and mixing. Its appeal is nostalgia and zero cost, and it suits Cubase users who want the old sound back.

What producers say

The re-release was welcomed as a nice anniversary gesture, but LM-7 itself is seen as a museum piece.
