What it does

Dark Planet is a Steinberg sound library for dark electronic, industrial and cinematic music, "loaded with hundreds of creepy sounds, shattering loops and eerie instruments." It is preset-based: you pick a sound and shape it with a few quick controls rather than building patches from scratch.

KVR lists version 3.5.10.

When to use it

Dark Planet is the cheap, quick route to gritty, distorted cinematic and industrial sounds. Compared with Omnisphere 3, it has a far smaller library and almost no deep programming, but it costs a fraction of the price and every preset is already aimed at one dark aesthetic. Unlike Pigments 7 or Serum 2, it is not a synth you design from oscillators up; you choose a preset and tweak it with the MorphFilter and effects. It suits HALion and Cubase users who want ready-made atmospheres, loops and basses for scoring.

What producers say

Reviewers treat it as a bargain for dark sound design, with few complaints beyond the drum content.
