Backbone is Steinberg's drum re-synthesizer for designing your own drum sounds.
- Layers: up to eight samples with classic subtractive synthesis.
- Decomposition: split samples into tonal and noise parts and re-synthesize them.
- Effects: up to eight, on two routable buses.
- DrumGAN: from version 1.5, AI-generated kicks, snares and cymbals, and analysis of existing samples.

A sound-design instrument for building custom kicks, snares, hats and percussion from your own samples, rather than a kit player. It complements a sample-based drum machine when you want unique layers.
