Surge XT Effects puts the effects section of the Surge XT synth into its own effect plugin, so you can run them on any track.
It is free and installs alongside Surge XT, and its vocoder can take a sidechain modulator while using the track itself as the carrier.
Best for: Vocals, Keys & Synths, Drums, Mix Bus, Sound Design. Genres: all genres.
Keywords: creative, synths, free, sidechain input, destructive, mixing, open source, simple, sound design, bus processing, chorus, drums, enhancement, exciter, flanger, full mix, mid/side, mix bus, phaser, ring mod, rotary, spring, tape, tempo-synced, vocals.
What it does
Surge XT Effects is a separate plugin that puts the free Surge XT synth's effects on any audio track without loading the synth. You choose one effect algorithm, then shape it with knobs and switches; the developer notes the switches "allow tempo sync" where it makes sense.
- Filtering: 3-band EQ, 11-band graphic EQ, Exciter and Resonator.
- Distortion: CHOW, Distortion, Neuron, Tape and Waveshaper.
- Mangling: Combulator, Frequency Shifter, Nimbus, Ring Modulator, Treemonster and Vocoder.
- Modulation: Chorus, Ensemble, Flanger, Phaser and Rotary Speaker.
- Time and space: Delay, Reverb 1, Reverb 2 and Spring Reverb.
- Multi-effects: the Airwindows algorithm (with 56 Airwindows effects inside it), Conditioner and a Mid-Side Tool.
- Vocoder on any source: the track is the carrier and a sidechain is the modulator, so other synths or audio can drive the vocoder. In the full synth this would need two sidechains, which most DAWs don't support.
It comes as an extra plugin with Surge XT (current stable release 1.3.4). It is free and open source under the GPL.

When to use it
Surge XT Effects is the pick if you want a large, free set of creative effects in one plugin, and especially a vocoder you can feed from any synth. Compared with Multipass or Kilohearts Snap Heap it runs one effect per instance, with no multiband splitting or modulation rack, so you stack instances for a chain. It has far more variety than Soundtoys Effect Rack for no money, but the sound and polish of each effect are not on the level of dedicated paid tools. Unlike Infiltrator 2 or Effectrix2, it has no step sequencer for rhythmic effects. Its Airwindows slot alone adds dozens of extra processors, which makes it good value as a sound-design toolbox.
- Best for: vocoding with an outside carrier, creative distortion and mangling (Nimbus, Combulator, Treemonster), and adding Surge's delays, reverbs and modulation to audio.
- Genres: electronic, experimental, ambient and synth-based music, though the EQs and Airwindows tools suit general mixing too.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a multi-effect chain with modulation in one window (Multipass), sequenced glitch effects (Effectrix2 or Infiltrator 2), or a polished single-purpose mixing reverb.
What producers say
There are few formal reviews; the coverage that exists welcomes it as a simple, free way to use Surge's effects.
- Chillout with Beats (Japanese blog, 2022) was very positive, valuing its simplicity and the 56 included Airwindows effects.
- Criticisms: the same blog noted that the Airwindows Console effects are not included, and wished for more effect options.
