SPL Transient Designer Plus by Brainworx / Plugin Alliance

The plug-in version of SPL's hardware Transient Designer, the original transient shaper. Its Differential Envelope Technology works without a threshold, so Attack and Sustain behave the same at any input level.

The Plus version adds a side-chain filter for targeting one element of a bus, a parallel Mix knob and a soft-clip limiter. It runs with zero latency, so it is safe while tracking.

Best for: Drums, Drum Bus, Guitars, Bass. Genres: all genres.

Keywords: bus processing, sidechain input, low latency, built-in mix knob, drum bus, bass, parallel processing, snare, soft clip, zero-latency, drums, electric guitar, mixing, external sidechain, kick, minimal controls, single-band, smooth, subscription, tight, tracking.

What it does

Brainworx's plugin version of SPL's hardware Transient Designer. It uses SPL's Differential Envelope Technology, so it shapes transients without a threshold: Attack and Sustain respond the same way whatever the input level.

It is included in Plugin Alliance's subscriptions; the current version is 1.11.3.

When to use it

This is the classic two-knob transient designer, and the reference the others in the list are measured against. It has fewer shaping options than Waves Smack Attack or Boz Transgressor 3 and none of the frequency-specific processing of oeksound spiff or Softube Transient Shaper, but it is quick, predictable and level-independent, so settings keep working when a drummer plays softer or harder. Native Instruments' Transient Master is a cheaper take on the same idea.

What producers say

Users describe it as the fastest way to fix a transient problem.
