Tenebra by The Newton Brothers by Spitfire Audio

A horror sound design library from The Newton Brothers, composers of Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House, mixing modular synths, orchestral recordings and unusual instruments.

It has 182 sounds and over 130 presets in Spitfire's Solar engine, for $199.

Best for: Sound Design, Keys & Synths. Genres: Ambient & Cinematic.

Keywords: eerie, sound design, preset-driven, modular, drones, film & game audio, dark, experimental, woodwinds, arpeggiator, cinematic, CPU-light, evolving, extreme, guitar instrument, monophonic, organic, pads, risers & hits, sequencer, strings, textures.

What it does

Tenebra collects the sounds The Newton Brothers use in horror scoring (Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, X-Men '97). They describe it as built for "slow-burn dread", blurring the organic and the synthetic.

It runs in Spitfire's Solar plugin, so it doesn't need Kontakt. It has a 40% student and educator discount.

When to use it

Tenebra is the pick for dark drones, mutated orchestra and strange percussion that play straight from presets. Compared with Augmented STRINGS and Augmented VOICES, it is narrower in scope but much more focused on horror and suspense, built from the composers' own synths and unusual acoustic instruments. Unlike BBC Symphony Orchestra Core, it is not built for writing conventional orchestral lines; its orchestral sounds come as textures, risers and swells. Its sounds evolve slowly, so it rewards time spent with held notes more than quick browsing.

What producers say

Reviews are positive, praising the character of the sounds and how playable the presets are; the main caveat is the time it takes to explore.
