What it does
Originals Intimate Woodwinds is a small, low-cost woodwind ensemble from Spitfire's Originals range, recorded in Lyndhurst Hall at AIR Studios. Five players are arranged so each one feathers in and out of its best range, so the group blends on its own for soft, close writing.
- Instruments: flute, alto flute, clarinet, bass clarinet and bassoon, played as one ensemble patch rather than separate instruments.
- Long presets: Long, Long Hollow, Long Swells and Long Air. Long Air is breath sound without pitch from half the section.
- Short presets: Short Tenuto, Short Marcato and Short Staccato, seven presets in all.
- Three mic signals: Close for detailed spot mics, Mix for the blended hall sound, and Vintage, processed through vintage equipment for extra colour.
- Performance controls: Expression and Dynamics for shaping phrases, plus Reverb.
- Preset-specific controls: Release on the long presets and Tightness on the short ones.
- Sound: aimed at what Spitfire calls "gentle pastoral underscore" and barely-there textures.

When to use it
Intimate Woodwinds is the pick when you want a soft woodwind colour in a few minutes and for very little money. Compared with BBC Symphony Orchestra Core or Hollywood Orchestra Opus Edition, it gives you no separate flutes, clarinets or bassoons to voice and only seven presets, but it needs no orchestration to sound blended and costs a fraction of the price. Against Spitfire's own Originals Epic Brass & Woodwinds it goes the other way, trading power and size for a quiet, close ensemble. The three mic signals, including the coloured Vintage option, give more tonal choice than you might expect at this price, but there are no legato or ornament patches for real melodic writing.
- Best for: soft woodwind chords, pads and gentle short figures under film, TV and media cues.
- Genres: cinematic, underscore, ambient and pastoral or folk-leaning scores.
- Look elsewhere if: you need individual instruments, solo lines or many articulations; BBC Symphony Orchestra Core or Hollywood Orchestra Opus Edition cover that.
