VELA by Sonic Academy

VELA is an algorithmic reverb that uses nodes to shape decay, density and damping, with custom early reflections and dual diffusion networks.

It adds pre and post EQ, ducking and de-essing, with over 160 presets, for £70 (about $92.73).

Best for: Vocals, Keys & Synths, Drums, Guitars, Sound Design. Genres: Electronic & EDM, Pop, Ambient & Cinematic.

Keywords: ducking, algorithmic, vocals, non-linear, preset-driven, reverse, classic, digital classic, hardware emulation, mixing, synths, 80s, cinematic, corrective, CPU-light, drums, inspired by, low latency, simple, sound design, vintage, wide.

What it does

VELA is an algorithmic reverb from Sonic Academy that gives you "total control over every aspect of a reverb's architecture." Its main idea is drawing the decay and density of the tail with nodes rather than setting a single decay time.

KVR lists version 1.0.3. The developer describes it as low CPU and low latency. It has a 14-day free trial.

When to use it

VELA is the better pick when you want to shape how a tail develops over time, not just how long it lasts. Compared with VintageVerb it is slower to dial in but gives far more control over density, damping and decay shape. Like Pro-R 2 it is a clean mixing reverb with built-in EQ and adds built-in ducking, de-essing and drawn density and decay curves. Unlike Seventh Heaven Professional, it does not model one specific hardware unit closely.

What producers say

Early press coverage was positive about VELA's node-based approach; there was little user feedback to read.
