What it does
Top Boost (30W Top Boost in Softube's manual) models a 1964 three-channel, six-input AC30 "Treble model" for "jangly cleans and singing overdrive". Softube calls the original "quirky but simple".
- Three channels: Vib-Trem, Normal and Brilliant, each with its own volume, so you can blend them.
- Vib-Trem channel: has an extra tube stage before its volume control, which makes it the most distorted channel.
- Vibrato and tremolo: a Vib Trem switch picks the effect and a Slow/Fast switch sets its speed; Softube calls the vibrato "the hero of this amp".
- Tone knob: works the opposite way to most: turning it right reduces the highs.
- Matching cabinet: in the Amp Room Vintage Suite it is paired with the Top Boost Blue 2x12, an open-back combo cabinet with Celestion Alnico Blue speakers.
- Where it runs: on its own as a plugin, or as a module inside Softube's Amp Room and the Flow Mixing Suite.
- Also in a bundle: it is one of four amps in the Amp Room Vintage Suite, next to the two Pacific Dual combos and Custom 100W.
The sources do not mention a trial.
When to use it
Top Boost is the cheap way to get one detailed AC30-style amp, with its quirky three-channel layout and built-in vibrato, into Amp Room. Compared with AmpliTube 5 MAX or Guitar Rig 7 Pro, which include AC30-style amps among many others, it gives you a single amp with its original controls rather than a whole collection. Against Softube's Pacific Dual Tremolo combos it is the British option, with its own chimey, harmonically rich voice and a vibrato as well as a tremolo. It is not a high-gain amp; for that, a Neural DSP Archetype or Softube's American Mainstayer fits better.
- Best for: jangly clean and crunchy British guitar, and vibrato-soaked parts.
- Genres: indie, Britpop, classic rock and country rock.
- Look elsewhere if: you need high gain (American Mainstayer or Archetype: Gojira X) or a complete rig in one plugin (AmpliTube 5 MAX).
- Tip: Softube suggests putting a boost or overdrive pedal in front and using that pedal's output level to shape how much the amp distorts.
