What it does
Tape Echoes is Softube's tape delay, modelled on vintage tape echo machines, with a spring reverb built in.
- Drive and Dirt: saturation plus tape artefacts such as wobble, flutter and dropouts. A "Just Dirt" mode gives the tape character with no repeats.
- Taps: a Number of Taps knob sets 1 to 3 taps, like the multiple playback heads on a tape unit.
- Timing and space: tempo sync, tap tempo, stereo or dual-mono operation, a spring reverb section and a wet/dry control.
- Versions: versions for Softube's Amp Room and Modular.
When to use it
A dedicated vintage tape echo rather than an all-round delay. It sits closer in spirit to Galaxy Tape Echo or Arturia's TAPE-201 than to a multi-style delay like Soundtoys EchoBoy or Valhalla Delay. The Just Dirt mode also makes it usable as a tape-flavour effect with no echo at all.
- Best for: slapback and dubby repeats on vocals, guitars and keys, and adding tape wobble to sounds.
- Genres: dub, rock, psychedelic, lo-fi and retro pop.
