What it does
Pacific Dual Tremolo 100W Black is Softube's model of an "iconic, clean American combo": per the Amp Room Vintage Suite manual, a 1966 "BF"-era tube combo known for its cleans that also does semi-dirty blues tones.
- Volume: a single Volume knob drives both the preamp and the power amp, so turning it up takes the amp from clean into breakup.
- Tone stack: Bass, Middle and Treble. Softube notes the tone stack, and the Bass knob in particular, changes the amount of distortion a lot.
- Bright: a high-frequency boost that, as on the original, only has a clear effect at lower volume settings.
- Tremolo: the built-in modulation is labelled Vibrato, as on the original amp, but it is actually a tremolo.
- Matching cabinet: in the Amp Room Vintage Suite it is paired with the Pacific Dual Black 2x12, loaded with Oxford 12T6 Blue speakers and taken from a 1966 combo.
- Where it runs: on its own as a plugin, or as a module inside Softube's Amp Room and the Flow Mixing Suite.
- Also in a bundle: it is one of four amps in the Amp Room Vintage Suite, next to the Silver version, Custom 100W and 30W Top Boost.
The sources do not mention a trial.
When to use it
Pacific Dual Tremolo 100W Black is the cheap way to add one classic American clean combo to Amp Room. Compared with Paradise Guitar Studio or AmpliTube 5 MAX, which include several American clean amps among many others, it gives you just one amp with a short, original-style control set, at a fraction of the price. Next to its Silver sibling it is the simpler amp: there is no master volume, so its breakup comes from the Volume knob and the tone stack, and Softube positions the Silver as the chimier of the two. Unlike Neural Amp Modeler, which loads captures of real amps, it offers a modelled amp with familiar knobs and the tremolo built in.
- Best for: clean and edge-of-breakup guitar, semi-dirty blues tones, and pulsing tremolo parts.
- Genres: blues, rock, pop, country and soul.
- Look elsewhere if: you want master-volume control over power amp distortion (the Silver version has it) or a full rig with effects in one window (AmpliTube 5 MAX or Guitar Rig 7 Pro).
- Tip: for very clean tones, Softube suggests turning the Bass knob down a little, since it adds a lot of distortion.
